Sometimes It’s Nice to be Single

TV.jpg I’ve got to admit, as much as I love life out on the town, sometimes I cherish a night spent with someone who knows exactly what I’m in the mood for without saying a word- myself. No matter how comfortable you get in a relationship, nothing will ever be the same as a night spent enveloped in completely mindless tasks and guilty pleasures.

For example, I’m a television fanatic. I make it a point not to watch too many premieres when the new season starts because I don’t want the addiction to become too time consuming. And I do mean addicting- my roommate knows better than to speak outside of commercial breaks during the hour that Grey’s Anatomy is on.

So, for my perfect date night with myself, I ordered in a perfect meal of sushi, potato chips, and a piece of fruit, poured myself a glass of white wine, and settled in to catch up on the most recent episodes of Heroes and LOST. To my own credit, watching “Sawyer” shirtless, combined with earnestly cute guys trying to save the world was good research for what I want in a man.

Afterwards, I was free to completely ignore the clothes that I’ve managed to pile on various items of furniture while my roommate is out of town, postpone dishes until tomorrow, and spend hours returning long neglected MySpace messages and discovering “Which Madonna Record Defines My Personality”. Productive, no not really, but why do I have to be a grown up every day?

So, I cherished this one glorious night to celebrate all of the benefits of being a single woman. I’m not working insane extra hours to save money for an extravagant Christmas surprise for my significant other, I don’t have to shave my legs unless I very well please, and I got to spend one night completely devoted to my own whims without feeling the slightest twinge of guilt.

In the years I’ve spent as a single woman, I can say I’ve really gotten to know myself, what makes me happy, and what’s important to me. Whether that has made me harder to deal with or pickier when it comes to dates, who’s to say? What I do know is that I didn’t sit at home last night with a tub of ice cream pining after a relationship like The Notebook. I enjoyed the company of a complicated and quirky woman, and I was completely content.

Oh, and while we’re on the topic, one of my other favorite things to do alone is read comments and emails from anyone reading, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on dating, life, or whatever’s on your mind! You can click on “Comments” below or email me on the top right column of your screen.
