Ladies, I’ve found a sure fire way to impress men- learn the game of football. I have to admit, this was unintentional on my part, because I’ve been watching since I was five years old, but in the past week I was shocked by how many times it led to impromptu conversations.
I guess I have my parents to thank. I was raised in a household that celebrated “Seahawk Sunday” as religiously as other families go to church. It was no surprise that Steve Largent was one of my early idols, and I played wide receiver in the street with my dad, brother and friends. That is, of course, until I discovered that teenage boys don’t always tackle fairly. So, I graduated to telling my fellow cheerleaders if we were on offense or defense from a prime, front row vantage point.
I had my first conversation with my “long distance blind date” on Friday night, and one of the main topics of conversation became the weather. He noticed that on Monday Night Football it was snowing in Seattle, and asked if that was a regular occurrence. I mentioned that I also watched the game and he was shocked! We continued to discuss that I not only watched the game, but knew our record, and our ranking in the race for the Super Bowl.
Then, last Wednesday, I was walking to the gym, wearing a Seahawks sweatshirt and walked by a guy doing construction. Some guy in a truck honked at me started gesturing enthusiastically, which normally I ignore, but I happened to turn my head. He pointed to his chest (to indicate the logo on my shirt) and gave me enthusiastic thumbs up. I smiled, waved, and continued walking.
Last night I sat down to watch the game at home, and decided at almost halftime that I needed to be out in a more exciting environment. A friend of mine bartends in front of five big screens on Sunday nights, so I jumped in a cab, knowing that even if he wasn’t working that I’d have a good view of the game. He was, and we chatted briefly, but I mainly focused on the close score.
The couple next to me struck up a conversation, and the guy asked me where my boyfriend was. Now, I hate this question, because it’s a wimpy way of asking if you’re single. So, I said he was #37, running down the field, and he laughed. Then, when his fiancée went to the restroom, he told me he was surprised that a girl at a bar, drinking beer and watching football, had a hard time finding a man, because that’s the kind of girl he would want. I smiled politely, and replied that the only men that I hear that from are those that are already in relationships.
What is it about men and girls who watch football? Is it that we have something in common? Is it that I have to have half a brain to follow the game? Or that if we like sports we may spend less time on shopping and make-up (not always true). I notice more and more cute female sportscasters, and sports gear made in pink and small sizes. I’m not going to question the logistics, but I’m going to make it a point to attend more sporting events in public, because it apparently showcases one of my most desirable traits that I completely overlooked.
