Sometimes the best times happen when you least expect it. I got a phone call Saturday afternoon from my girlfriend from home who I’m in completely infrequent contact with, who happened to be in NYC. She looks exactly like the lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls, so we’ll call her “Doll”. She was visiting guy friends and wanted some female company.
I met up with Doll for a beautiful New York night. She was staying at the W hotel, so after her phone call I went home to get dressed, poured myself a drink for the journey (since she promised she was waiting in the room drinking beers, and I wanted to keep up) and hit the town.
We met up with the guys, one of whom knew musicians in town, and headed to a jazz club to see their show. Now, I’m not much of a jazz fan (I tend to think it sounds like a bunch of people playing different songs at the same time), but I do have an undying respect for musicianship. One of the guys, “Dude” an ex of Doll’s, was obviously bored and spent the entire show text messaging under the table.
We left the show and Dude made a big show about heading back to his hotel, hinting at Doll that he wanted her to join him. She had no desire to revisit the past, so we went to get her some authentic New York cheesecake instead. As we indulged, I pulled out the phone and started networking for plans to show her more of the city.
I called “Spike”, one of my best guy friends from college, who recently moved to the city, and who I constantly run into on the street. I’d seen him a few days early and we’d talked about hanging out on Saturday, so I asked where he and his friends were. We headed to the Upper East Side to meet up with him and some friends.
What started as one drink quickly became many surrounded by a fun and engaging group of guys. One of Spike’s friends, who bore a striking resemblance to Tom Brady so they would make quite an attractive couple, moved in and dominated her attention so I fluttered around to Spike’s other friends. Before we knew it, we were closing the place down.
