It’s always great to have friends visit, but after four days of having Doll in town I am worn out! Living a vacation lifestyle and getting up to go to work while she recovers in front of the TV has definitely taken it’s toll. Although, I’ve got to admit, the memories have been worth the blurry red eyes in the morning.
Our Saturday night ended with us leaving the bar and going to Brady’s house to watch Wedding Crashers- an idea that took me straight back to nights in college when it was easy to walk down the hall after a party. We all ended up falling asleep on the couch like dominos, head-to-foot-to-head, etc. After a few hours of sleep resulting in serious back cramps, I realized I was definitely not still in those glory days, and was desperate for a shower and my own bed.
Sunday was devoted to playoff football, so Doll and I caught a cab home, changed into appropriate fan attire, and met Spike, Brady and friends at a downtown sports bar. We also grabbed her bags because she was planning on heading straight to the airport from the bar. After a disappointing loss, we walked Doll to the subway station and said our good-byes. She and I had spent the past few days discussing how much she loved New York, and was planning to move back ASAP, so I was cheerful, but Brady had the look of a kid on Christmas who just broke his brand new toy.
Five minutes later, while walking towards Brady’s to watch the second round of football, my phone rang. Doll had gotten to the bottom of the subway stairs and decided she absolutely could not get on a plane, changed her flight, and wanted to know where to meet us! Brady was now glowing, so we made another late night of it, ordering Thai food and concocting an interesting variation of cinnamon pina coladas to accompany them.
Sadly, my job decided not to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. as a holiday, so I was dragging my butt out of bed come Monday morning. I spent the day dreaming of a nap, but was immediately vetoed when I arrived home to Doll getting dressed up and proclaiming that since she decided to stay we had “a date with New York City”. So, I settled for caffeine, dinner at Vinyl, dancing at a great little meatpacking bar called Ciello, and drinks at my favorite Irish Pub.
By Tuesday, it was all I could do to keep my upper and lower eyelids from crashing together. Thank god my boss was out of town, so I could slack a little bit, but I knew that Doll was leaving the next day, so I braced myself for the home stretch. Luckily, by this point she was starting to feel the same fatigue as I was. Our final evening consisted of manicures, Avenue Q, a quick drink to say goodbye to Spike, and Coupling on DVD before we fell asleep. As I drifted off, the lyrics to “I Wish I Could Go Back to College” where “I wish I could just drop a class…” could not have resonated more.
