A Long Day

Every once in a while you have “one of those days”. The fact that I can quote that phrase with full faith that you’ll understand what it means shows its universal nature.

Winter.jpgIt started with the fact that it’s bitterly cold outside. Even with a full length winter coat, scarf, and gloves, the wind was blowing so hard it kept knocking my hood off. I’m not a fan of winter to begin with, so weather like this is torture.

Couple that with NOT wanting to get out of bed the day after Super Bowl Sunday. My body is still adjusting to the early morning hours of having a “real job”, not to mention that I’m used to watching the big game in the afternoon, allowing you time to recover.

But I made it, and got through the work day with a few little personal victories. I’m getting to know the people I work with, and starting to understand the way things work. I left the office pretty satisfied.

That was until the subway ride. Sure, I’ve dealt with delays before but today, after stopping for twenty minutes, we got an announcement that no trains were running on my line, there was no shuttle bus service available, and they weren’t sure when they could even move backwards to a station where we could transfer.

I tried to play “The Subway Game”, something a friend taught me to pass the time when taking a long ride. After each stop, you choose the person in the car you’d most like to hook up with if you had to choose just one. Usually this can keep me pretty entertained, but loses a little of its charm when played alone. And when there’s only one guy in your car.

Arriving home almost two hours later, I had to laugh at the song that came through my headphones. As I climbed the last set of stairs to the front door, Etta James took the words right out of my mouth- “At Last” indeed.
