The Wonderful World of the Subconscious

Dreaming.jpgI absolutely love that place right in between deep sleep and fully conscious. You know, right after you hit the snooze bar, or when you’re falling asleep and someone tries to hold a conversation with you? Your mind is free to roam, but you still feel somewhat in control of where it goes.

I discovered this place as a kid because I never wanted to get out of bed for school. I would always ask mom for “just five more minutes” so I could go back and try to chase the dream that I had been yanked out of.

And it’s here where you get the most amazing combination of fantasy and reality. Lately, during my “snooze” time I always try to picture a gorgeous man joining the story and either rescuing me or is thrilled to have found me, who grabs me and kisses me like he hasn’t seen me in years. Okay, okay, so I like cheesy romance novels. Forgive me.

But it’s what happens when you slip just below that line of control that becomes fascinating. The other night I slipped away from that gorgeous man and decided to go on a bike ride with some girlfriends from home, through a muddy dinosaur graveyard, on our way to a Broadway show, while The Sopranos theme song played in the background. And, of course, we stopped and got stuck in the mud.

Then comes the fun part- waking up and trying to figure out where all of this came from. Girlfriends from home- easy, I’m visiting in a couple weeks. Bike riding- when the weather teased us last week a good friend started riding his to work. Broadway show- I was offered tickets last week. Dinosaur graveyard- who the heck knows?! There’s always one part of your mind that you are completely unaware of.

And the theme song? I’ve been hooked on The Sopranos on DVD, and totally have a crush on Tony Soprano. My good friend teased me that would actually be pretty typical of my taste in men. Sure, their intentions are good, but how much should you really be willing to let slide?
