Sometimes the Fates (and the winds) are Against You

Storm.jpgWith the storm on Sunday night, Callie’s flight was grounded and we were given one last night together. I had joked that my goal was to at least make out with a cute guy before she left, and she swore to make it her mission that night. She vowed to play wing man and wanted to see me kiss someone before she got on a plane.

After fighting brutal rain and wind, we walked into Red Rock West Saloon, a Coyote Ugly style bar that has a generally female-friendly ratio. Not tonight- there were only about eight people in the entire bar and only three were men. We decided to at least have a drink while we were there, and at the insistence of the bored bartender, we danced on the bar with her and took a few shots.

Accepting that this was not a destination location for the evening, I texted a promoter friend to ask for a good place to “drink and flirt” for the night. He responded, “My apt? Ha, ha, just kidding. Try APT, there’s a good mixed crowd there” So we bundled up and braced ourselves for the winter storm attempting to deter us.

This may have been true most nights, but we discovered ten seconds after walking in the door that the only straight man in the room was the bartender, wearing the ultimate deterrent on his left ring finger. Callie and I were both feeling a little tipsy at this point, so after a drink and a few minutes of dancing, we agreed to head closer to home to close out the night.

We returned to one of my favorite neighborhood bars, the scene where we had met Caution Tape a few nights before. Either we were cursed, or the entire rest of the city had heeded the storm warnings because we were the only people there other than the staff, who were excited just to have some company. We ordered drinks, but about two sips in to them we agreed that nothing sounded more comforting than climbing under a warm comforter.

I thanked Callie her determination, but some things you just can’t force. We went home that night knowing that we had put ourselves out there, but it just wasn’t in the stars for us that night. It would probably help if we went out on a night that we could actually see them through the clouds.
