Oh my god (to quote the opening song from Legally Blonde), if you are in New York, go see this show! It’s the most amazing blend of hip hop, Latin music and musical theater. And one of the leads is absolutely adorable.
That’s Christopher Jackson in the tie, and definitely the latest recipient of my pseudo-celebrity crush. I first saw him at the Drama Desk Awards last weekend where he was chosen out of the cast to accept an ensemble award and speak on their behalf. Beautifully eloquent.
Then I noticed the ring on his left hand. Normally a total turn off, but this is an imaginary crush so the fact that he’s committed is quite endearing.
He embodies what my girlfriends and I like to call the 90/10 theory. Each of my girlfriends has agreed that the perfect combination is a guy who is 90% clean cut, ambitious and put together, but if they have 10% of a rough edge or street credibility, we’re hooked. I may want a white picket fence someday, but I want kids break dancing in the lawn in front of it.
Anyway, back to the show. In the Heights incorporates rap, salsa, hip hop and New York references without ever turning corny. And the seats are inexpensive! My girlfriends and I got great mezzanine seats (in a small theater) for $36 dollars tonight, and they’re even discounted at TKTS. I always said I would never be a good salesperson because I can’t push anything I’m not passionate about, but if you’re in the NY area and have a chance to see this show, DO IT!
