Bald is the New Black

I don’t know whether we have Chris Daughtry or Britney Spears to thank for the fact that every new musician I’ve fallen in love with lately seems to be follically-lacking (and I have no idea how to spell that, since I’m pretty sure it’s not a real word), but it’s become an undeniable trend.

I adore a man who chooses to embrace the cue ball coif. It embodies this interesting blend of confidence in head shape with the vulnerability of hiding a receding hair line. And sure, for some it’s probably just a fashion statement.

Here’s just a couple that have gone into heavy rotation on my iPod lately:

Foy Vance-

This soulful European import is a beautiful lyricist who infuses his ballads with a charmingly quirky sense of humor. His MySpace page is filled with videos of his gorgeously layered vocals being played in various public bathrooms- a concept he dubbed “the Birth of the Toilet Tour”. With dark gravelly Tom Waits drawl that you would never expect to come out of this lanky Englishman, he has been featured twice on Grey’s Anatomy and I recently caught an amazing live set of his at Joe’s Pub.

Tyrone Wells-

This Southern California transplant from Spokane, WA sings the greatest lyrical gift to women since “Your Body Is A Wonderland” called “Baby Don’t You Change”, where he insists that he prefers your beautifully real mind and body to a model who can’t hold a conversation. And “Dream Like New York” will remind even the most jaded New Yorker why they’re here chasing their dreams in the first place. He’s a little more soulful, and in my own humble opinion a lot cuter, than anyone in Maroon 5 (Adam Levine never did anything for me).
