Remember, Bartenders Usually Make Bad Boyfriends
Although I maintain the general rule that it’s a bad idea to date someone you work with, I can’t help but have my interest perked by two guys at my new job. As much as I’m fighting it, I’ve admitted to having a weakness for bartenders in the past, and it really doesn’t help that I’ve been spending six of my seven days a week there lately, leaving little room to meet men in the “real world”.
The two guys that I’ve found myself picturing just as I close my eyes to fall asleep (a little trick I use so that, although I may live in Singleville, my dreams play out the romantic life I aspire to) could not be more different.
The first we’ll call “Alpha Male”, because he just exudes raw masculinity and sex appeal. He walks through the door with oversize basketball warm-ups draped over his tall frame and speaks in a low, gruff voice and thick East Coast accent. He’s known among the staff for being moody and can be pretty damn intimidating when he’s grumpy.
Somehow, this indifferent attitude makes me yearn for his attention. Although he doesn’t go out of his way to be friendly or make conversation, he peppers any interactions with “Excuse me, hon” or “Thanks, sweetie” that seem to soften the image just a smidge. Then again, the bar is pretty big with a large staff, so maybe he just isn’t really sure of my first name.
He’s got a vulgar mouth when it comes to sex, too. The bar staff is predominantly a boy’s club, so while cleaning up at the end of a long night, he announced nonchalantly that he needed to find the nearest rub-and-tug joint to blow off some steam. I know, I know…I should be repulsed and offended as a feminist, but somehow, when a few minutes later I overhear him talking to a friend later that he would want to settle down with a nice girl who can talk like a whore, I immediately picture myself behind closed doors screaming obscenities.
I’m confident nothing will ever come of it. It’s pure, animalistic attraction and I have no intention of acting on it. It’s the second guy that I’m more concerned about, but I’ll have to save that story for another time.
