Sometimes You Just Have to Laugh (Especially at Yourself!)
I haven’t read The Secret, but the one thing I have heard is to watch what you say out loud because it puts it out there in The Universe and there’s no taking it back. This definitely applied to me chatting with some of the girls about the last time we had a late night out on the town.
It just so happens that, eight hours later, we were all grinning about our busy night and the unexpectedly large wads of cash burning a hole in our pockets. We decided that after a long night of serving other people drinks that it was time to treat ourselves to a few.
Well, of course a few turned into MANY, and before I knew it I was stumbling home just as a hint of pink at the edges of the horizon taunted me with sunrise. I got into my building, climbed the stairs and went to put my key in the lock…but it wouldn’t fit. So I tried again, jiggling it a little bit. Still nothing.
Now I was starting to panic. My already impaired motor skills were not being helped by a shaky hand and utter frustration. Then finally, the key slid into the lock and I did a little victory dance in my head. This was until I tried to turn the key and felt it jam as if against a cement wall.
Now I was really nervous. Did I get notice that they were changing the locks and forget to take appropriate action? Or is my key completely bent out of shape? Either way, the last thing I want to do in this state is wake up my landlord just to get into the house.
So, I reluctantly dialed my roommate, dreading being an unwelcome wake up call. Roomie answered (thankfully) and I began babbling “I’m-stuck-in-the-hallway-and-my-key-won’t-work-and-I’m-so-sorry-to-wake-you-up-and-plese-say-that-you’re-at-home-but-could-you-please-open-the-door-for-me?”
A minute later I rejoiced at the sound of a lock clicking and the door creaking open- until I looked up and realized it was coming from one floor above me, where the door to my actual apartment, and my roommate, were laughing hysterically at me.
