Porn People? Surprisingly Normal.
Last night, through an invite from a friend of a friend, I ended up at a release party for a porn DVD. I was coming from work, so definitely not overdressed, but I definitely wasn’t sure what to expect.
I attended largely because my girlfriend that invited me was leaving the city the next day to work out of state for a few months (as so many of my favorite friends tend to do in this town). We had a funny text exchange over the invite:
- Just got to Downtown Bar. Go upstairs and say you’re here for the DVD release party
- BTW the DVD being released is porn
- (I respond) Are you in it?
- Cute.No, but bring $20 if you want a copy…
- OK, I’m upstairs. Where are you?
- Go right towards sex. On the couch. [She was sitting on the couch with the DVD broadcast on the wall behind her, not actual sex on the couch. Although I definitely did a double take.]
So, I walk in expecting whips, chains, and crazy costumes, and it’s surprisingly tame. I see more action in dark corners of the after-work sports bar that I work in on a Friday night than I do in this environment.
I’ve never been a huge fan of pornography as a turn-on, but I am fascinated watching it. It’s such a taboo subject in our society, but it’s really visually interesting. Plus (since the director like to add somewhat realistic elements), I like to get a vague idea of what I look like in the heat of the moment, without subjecting myself to a ceiling mirror or scandalous sex tape.
One thing I did appreciate in the room is the openness involved. I can’t even use a real name on this blog, for fear it would somehow be leaked back to my grandmother, and these people are willing to share themselves intimately, unclothed and vulnerable. There is something in that freedom that I admire.
