An Open Letter to My Girlfriends

I always wanted a sister, someone to stay up giggling with late into the night, to share make-up tips and wardrobes, someone who knows with just a look how I’m feeling, and someone loyal to a fault.

But we can’t have this without the other side of family. You’re the ones who know exactly how to get under your skin, what to say to hit the hardest, and know how I’m going to react before anything happens.

You’re the first ones I want to tell when something exciting happens, and the ones I’m most concerned with sharing anything I’m unsure about. Your opinion matters so much to me that I sometimes hesitate to share anything that I think might let you down.

There are times that you know me better than I know myself. You know just what to ask to help me find the answer that I’ve been circling around. And then there are times when you don’t know me at all, and I realize that I want to fight even harder to understand each other as we grow older.

I’m fascinated watching who you choose to share your lives with. Your experiences, joys and mistakes in relationships continue to define who you are. I’m impressed by the men who recognize all of the beauty that I see in you, and am enraged by those who hurt you with any level of disregard for your feelings.

More than anything you’re the ones who I can’t imagine my life without. We may fight, grow apart or disagree, but you’re worth the effort to stay in touch and make things right. Your smiles decorate my walls, your thoughts fill boxes of cards that I turn to on a rough day, and your voices echo throughout my head, not to mention filling my voice mail.

I would not be who I am without you. We may not be bonded by blood, but you’re the ones who know me by heart.

  1. My girlfriends are my “sisters” too. I love them like I love my family.
