One Original Thought

I definitely didn’t love Garden State as much as the rest of the world, but I do love Natalie Portman’s character’s attempt to be original.

Sometimes in dating, life, blogging, it just feels like we’re doing the same things over and over again. We repeat mistakes, we turn to each other for assurance that everyone makes these mistakes, and then we all feel comforted by being similar.

But something in me has always wanted to be unique. I have theories that it has to do with being a twin (not identical), with some sort of superiority complex, with a jealous streak, etc. One of the reasons I kinda suck at networking is that I turn a mild shade of green when I hear that someone else is also a writer. I have a mean innate competitive spirit.

I love/hate to read someone who says exactly what I’m thinking in a way so beautifully that I refuse to even attempt to top it. I have a hard time with friends who try to comfort me with stories from their own life to show that I’m not alone. It’s a side I don’t particularly like about myself.

Tonight, I don’t have an original thought, so I guess my only option is to take a cue from Natalie, be completely unoriginal, and dance around my living room. At least it’ll be my moment.
