Was It Good for You, Commenters?

female-brain.jpgI’ve been reading The Female Brain and came across a quote that surprised me, but somehow made perfect sense. In her research, Louann Brizendine, M.D. found that “Connecting through talking activates the pleasure centers in a girl’s brain… It’s a major dopamine and oxytocin rush, which is the biggest, fattest neurological reward you can get outside of an orgasm” [!]

Is it any wonder we’re all here? It’s not a TMI disorder that compels us to share the intimate details of our lives; it’s a scientifically triggered instinct. To be honest, pressing the right buttons on the keyboard can take less effort than pressing your own buttons.

I was beginning to worry about my seemingly obsessive urge to monitor my page views, or the uncontrollable grin at someone responding to what I had to say. Was it normal for this to make me feel as giddy as those one of those hand-passed notes in middle school asking me to check-yes-or-no?

We’ve all heard that exercise can give us endorphins, and that chocolate can produce a fraction of the satisfaction of sex but, according to this quote, personal connection blows those two out of the water. It’s obviously not a replacement for actual real-life dating (or what would we all have to talk about?) but thanks ladies and gentlemen, for the virtual one-post-stands and cyber-relationships.
