My girlfriends and I got ourselves all worked up over the rumor flying around that New Kids On the Block might be staging a reunion tour. That’s right, the one show that might possibly be more delightfully embarrassing (and infinitely more entertaining) to attend than The Spice Girls.
It started with a People magazine article pointing to new video up on the NKOTB website. Now, I spent an elementary school carnival with the words “I *Heart* Joey McIntyre” painted on my cheek, so yes, as a grown woman and college graduate, I am already officially a member of the email list.
We began buzzing back and forth, posting MySpace bulletins, investigating plane tickets, and plotting t-shirt designs with our chosen boys’ names emblazoned across the backs. I relegated myself to Jon Knight, due largely to extreme competition. He was always my backup choice- the cute, shy one who at least he knew when to walk away (ahem, Jordan Knight, ahem…).
But alas, the latest internet buzz is that it was all a publicity stunt, promoting some dumb reality show- Re-Making the Menuedo (Without P.Diddy but With a Cooler Name) 12. I’m left feeling hurt, tricked, and little like I just found a fake fifth grade note asking me to meet Little Mr. Popular by the tire swings after school so he can ask me out, only to be greeted by a laughing crowd if I dare to show up.
There’s a whole omelette of egg on my face because I rarely even follow celebrity gossip (I’m more Entertainment Weekly than US Weekly), but they found just the right morsel to dangle in front of my nose, and I’ve been duped. Rereading the original article just proves to me that I was holding onto false hope and reading between the lines for the message I really wanted to hear. As if I needed this outside of my dating life.
Bad move, marketing dept, bad move…

oh. my. gosh. how can they use the New Kids to promote Menudo? I mean, seriously? how are they even close??
that would have seriously been the funnest concert of my life. especially because my friend’s dad wouldn’t have had to be there with us.
I’m so digging out the videos.

I agree! I’m holding on to that tiny glimmer of hope reflecting off of their perfectly hairspray-coifed hair that says it really is true…
