OJ, Kleenex, and daytime TV sums up my existence over the weekend. Thanks go to the windstorms that spread germs all across the city and kept me cuddled under blankets all weekend long. I canceled plans, fell asleep at all odd hours of the day, and blew through a roll of toilet paper faster than a kid who overestimates what they need to wipe.
It can be infuriating when you’re sick and the world doesn’t stop moving around you. When I was forced to venture out into the streets clad in multiple, non-matching layers and a baseball cap to mask my inability to muster the strength to shower, I wanted everyone to slow their movements to my fog-swimming pace. I wanted to scream, “Get out of my way! At least be nice to me or I’ll cough on you. Can’t you see that I’m sick?!”
Obviously, the city that never sleeps is that last place that’s going to wait for you to catch up, whether you stopped to tie a shoelace or are engulfed in a coughing fit, so I resigned myself to staying home and watching game shows, MTV marathons, the entire Grammy ceremony, and my second time through this last week’s LOST. And while I had some wonderful friends offer to bring me anything I needed, the only person I could turn to for my late night craving for miso soup was a delivery man. At least I could tip him well for politely averting his eyes at the mess that answered the door.
